Pan A La Catalana

pan a la catalana Today’s recipe is a perfect example of something which tastes good and also does you good. Pan a la catalana, is made with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil and is a really great alternative to a bog standard sandwich, which can sometimes contain too many saturated fats and calories. This recipe proves you can have a tasty bread snack without reaching for the butter or mayonnaise. And as there’s no cooking required, only takes minutes to prepare, so a great snack especially if you have any home-grown or vine ripened tomatoes.

Pan a la catalana

Prep to plate: 10 minutes

Difficulty: Difficulty level 1

Ingredients: ( for 1 )

  • 1 slice of rustic bread
  • 1 clove garlic (peeled)
  • 1 large  ripe tomato (the riper the better)
  • olive oil

Method:

This is the quickest way but if your tomato is quite firm it will not mash down easily. One way round is to soften the tomato by cutting it in half and popping under a hot grill or oven until it softens and becomes juicier.

  1. Toast bread
  2. Drizzle some olive oil and rub garlic on to the hot bread.
  3. Cut tomato in half and squash it on top of the garlic until the pulp covers the bread.
  4. Finish with a pinch of salt (optional) and another drizzle of olive oil.
  5. Now you can tuck in!

There are many regional variations of this popular bread based recipe which originated in the North, but  is now a popular breakfast dish all over Spain. Extras are sometimes added like a slice of cheese, Serrano ham or olives. It would be good to hear if you come up with any other great flavour combinations. Have fun experimenting!  Salud. 🙂
